Calling all revenue managers: here’s 3 ways to monetise team building at your hotel.
Some venues opt to site robust, immobile team building puzzle games on their grounds, these are highly effective in the short term. Permanent, self-managed games look exciting and can be sold at a low additional cost to your conference customers – they also have a high profit margin.
The downside to permanent team building puzzle games is that you can typically only do them once. The puzzle nature of the games means that once solved it is unlikely that a conference client will want to do the same game next time. Bear in mind that permanent team building games can take up valuable space in your grounds and can be unsightly on wedding photos (if you operate in this market).
2. Onsite team building company
For those venues lucky enough to have the grounds and big enough budgets having your own activity centre on site is the ultimate offering to any prospective conference client looking for an afternoon team build.
High ropes courses, laser tag arenas, shooting ranges and off road tracks are some examples of venues turning their non-productive marginal grounds into exciting (and money making) team building spaces.
3. Reselling a team building company’s events
If you don’t have hundreds of acres or bags of cash to invest then most mobile team building providers offer a commission for reselling their events and they are invariably happy to provide brochures, lists of activities and evening entertainments for you to forward onto your clients at the enquiry stage.
Be careful not to over commit to an individual team building company I would advise cultivating a relationship with several businesses. Don’t forget that every team building company will have their own marketing team and budget with which to win their client’s directly – don’t discount all of this untapped free marketing for your hotel by aligning yourself too closely with one provider.
When roles are reversed and team building companies are looking to bring their clients to your hotel chain it can be off putting when their competitor’s posters are in the foyer or their logos are all over your website.
Finally be aware that some clients may not wish to use a particular team building company so you don’t want to pigeon hole yourself.
